Recovery checklist

The first 24 hours after identity theft

A calm, practical place to start when something doesn’t look right.

Your next steps

  1. Contact the fraud department at affected banks or companies using their official website or the number on your statement. Ask about securing the affected accounts.
  2. Change compromised passwords using a trusted device. Use a unique password for each account and turn on multi-factor authentication.
  3. Consider a fraud alert or credit freeze. In the US, request a freeze separately from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
  4. Report identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov and save your recovery plan. If appropriate, file a local police report.
  5. Keep a record of suspicious activity, calls, reference numbers, and copies of letters. Avoid sharing full passwords, PINs, or card details.
General information, not legal advice. Procedures vary by country. In the US, find official assistance at IdentityTheft.gov.
